Solo: A Star Wars Story

Can Kids See “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (& My Interview with NEW Chewbacca Joonas Suotamo)

If your kids are Star Wars fans, they’re probably expecting to see Solo: A Star Wars Story as soon as humanly possible. It’s rated PG-13 though, which could mean just about anything these days. So, can you take your kids to see Han Solo’s origin story, or is it simply too much for younger viewers?
The MPAA gave that PG-13 rating for “sequences of sci-fi action/violence,” which is on par with every other Star Wars movie that has come out in the past few years. One big difference I noticed between Solo and every other PG-13 film I’ve seen recently is the lack of profanity. In fact, I can’t remember hearing a single swear word in the whole film. I was even a little surprised to see that PG-13 rating, because Solo: A Star Wars Story could almost be rated PG, in my mind. There is also little to no sexuality, except for a handful of steamy make-out scenes between Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and his girlfriend, Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke).
Solo: A Star Wars Story isn’t a perfect movie, especially when compared to other films in the series. Director Ron Howard took over in the middle of production and, possibly due to a rushed release (they were trying to hit the 35th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi), the film suffers from shallow story-lines and a lack of character development. Solo makes up for it with a stellar cast though, who seem to be having a blast in their iconic roles. I gave it a B- and feel that any kid who likes Star Wars films will enjoy Solo and not walk away scarred by violence or with a cache of new dirty words to try.
If you take your family to see Solo: A Star Wars Story (buy tickets HERE), please share your thoughts and experiences in the COMMENTS below. Also, take a minute to watch my interview with the new Chewbacca, Joonas Suotamo. He is positively ADORABLE and a great addition to the franchise!
