MOVIE REVIEW: Can This Series Be “Bourne” Again?

Have you ever been watching one of those entertainment shows, like Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight, when they go Behind the Scenes at a movie location? Sometimes they’ll show a car chase being filmed and you realize how small and choreographed everything is, compared to how it looks on the big screen.

Well, that’s how I felt while watching Matt Damon in Jason Bourne.

In this edition of the Bourne series, Jason Bourne is back and…

You know what? I’m not even going to tell you because it’s so predictable, you could probably come up with the plot on your own. Paul Greengrass is back as Director, but this is the first Bourne movie that didn’t use script writer Tony Gilroy. That’s probably why they ended up with a paint-by-numbers story. There’s also the problem of dialogue, which leaves high caliber actors like Damon and Tommy Lee Jones sounding so dry and lifeless, you want to offer them some water. Oscar winner Alicia Vikander suffers the most, and struggles with her American accent like she’s storing acorns in her cheeks.

We don’t watch Bourne movies for the story or dialogue, though. We watch them for the ACTION! So how does this one measure up?

The car chases this time around feel somehow slower and more involved. The intensity and realism from previous Bourne films have been replaced by stunts. This might be fine for some viewers, but they took me out of the moment. They were also reminders that Jason Bourne is “Number 5” in a series that is clearly running out of ideas.

The end result is a movie that simply feels lazy. Even Jason Bourne the character is phoning it in. He no longer wears a hat or hoodie to disguise his face and seems strangely unconcerned with being recognized. He even travels by train now, which seems pretty breezy for a national security threat.

I took a friend to see Jason Bourne last night, and didn’t realize until the lights went down that it was the first one she’d ever seen. Afterwards, my friend said she could follow the story easily enough but was surprised by how predictable it was. Then she said, “So I guess that’s what a Bourne movie looks like.”

No honey, that’s not what they look like at all. Jason Bourne is just another mediocre action flick, trying to look like a Bourne movie. –C-
