Christmas and New Years are behind us, but many folks are lucky enough to still have a few days off. Mary Poppins Returns is getting mixed reviews, but critics would probably say the same about the original if it was released today. It’s hard to not be cynical about this kind of candy-coated Disney whimsy, but what’s the point? Sure, it’s a bit strange to see hand-drawn animation and this level of wide-eyed theatrics in 2019, but it’s also a little refreshing. In other words, if you go into Mary Poppins Returns expecting anything other than singing penguins and dancing lamp-lighters, maybe the movie ISN’T the problem. (B)

Christian Bale will probably walk away with an Oscar this year, thanks to his portrayal of Dick Cheney in Vice. Bale, Amy Adams and Steve Carell all give career-best performances in this road-to-the-White House tale, but Vice isn’t always easy to follow. Director Adam McKay continuously makes the trippy asides he’s become famous for, but they feel out of place in an otherwise dry, historical drama. They do make the film a bit more enjoyable, and Vice is definitely one to see if you want to stay on top of the Best Actor/Best Actress race. (B)

The best thing about Aquaman is definitely it’s star, Jason Momoa. That’s why it’s a little disappointing that director James Wan loaded the film up with multiple story-lines and over-the-top computer animation. While attempting to ensure a little something-for-everyone, Aquaman actually saps some of Momoa’s charm. There’s so much happening at once though, you will be entertained on some level throughout the entire movie. It’s also a great one to share with your kids (read my Mommy Movie Review HERE). (B-)

Bumblebee might be the best Transformers movie that’s ever been made, but that’s not really saying much. These films aren’t for everyone, but this Autobot story is more fun and emotionally satisfying than the others. Maybe it’s because Steven Spielberg stepped in as Executive Producer, or possibly because star Hailee Steinfeld shines in any role she takes on. Bumblebee is a surprising and wildly enjoyable addition to the saga, but it will NOT make a Transformers fan out of anyone. (B)

I’ve been singing the praises of Instant Family since it was released in November. It stars Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne in the true story of an adopted family, but Instant Family won’t be in theaters much longer. Read my earlier review HERE if you need more encouragement, and catch Instant Family on DVD March 5th if you miss it now. (A)

I know you’re tempted to blow-off yet another Spider-Man movie, but you absolutely SHOULD NOT blow-off Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It’s not only one of the best superhero movies to come out this year, it’s also one of the best FILMS (definitely in my Top 10 of 2018). Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is rated PG so you can take ALL of the kids, and you should go ahead and download it’s stellar soundtrack. Read my original review HERE, if you still aren’t convinced. (A)

If you skip Green Book, you’re missing out on one of the year’s top Best Picture contenders. Viggo Mortensen plays Tony Lip, a New York doorman who became a driver for accomplished African-American pianist, Don Shirley (played by Oscar winner Mahershala Ali). Shirley performed concerts for wealthy southerners during the 1960’s and Lip was his driver/security guard, but the trip changed both of their lives. Green Book is inspiring and funny, and occasionally leans towards magical. It also features some wonderful photos of Tony Lip and Dr. Shirley in real life, so remember to stay through the credits.
