I think I’ve heard more about the Ghost in the Shell controversy than I’ve heard about the movie itself. See, Ghost in the Shell is based on a popular Japanese manga and the main character, Major, has always been considered Japanese. There were cries of whitewashing when Scarlett Johansson was cast in the role, but not everyone agrees. In fact, the director of the original anime, Mamoru Oshii, had this to say to IGN.com:
“What issue could there possibly be with casting her?” Oshii told IGN by e-mail. “The Major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one. The name ‘Motoko Kusanagi’ and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her. Even if her original body (presuming such a thing existed) were a Japanese one, that would still apply.”
You can read the rest of the article HERE, but I always feel the best way to express outrage over a movie while still appreciating it is to SEE IT FOR FREE! Lucky for us, I have passes to Ghost in the Shell so you can do just that! Click HERE to get those, then watch the trailer below. Oh yeah, and Scarlett Johansson supposedly gets naked in this, but that’s not REALLY why you want to see it, right???
