The Meryl Streep Effect: Could There Be an Oscar Shake-Up This Year?

I was pretty underwhelmed when the Oscar Nominations were announced this year. Some of my favorites were ignored (namely Deadpool and Annette Benning’s performance in 20th Century Women) and I felt we were on our way to a repeat of the Golden Globes. I even predicted, in multiple radio interviews the day of the nominations, that La La Land would sweep it’s categories again, with some important nods going to Moonlight.

Then something interesting happened, possibly bolstered by the speech Meryl Streep gave when she accepted her Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes. If you somehow missed it, you can read the transcript here.

Everyone got political after that. Continue reading →

Top 8 Movies to See THIS WEEKEND

(OK, so I wrote this right before Thanksgiving, but the list still applies. I would only add Jackie with Natalie Portman this week, IF it happens to be playing in your town.)

What are you supposed to do with your relatives, once you’ve eaten all the food and run out of things to talk about? You GO TO THE MOVIES, of course! The sooner the better too, before anyone starts talking about politics again. Here’s my list of the Top 8 Movies to See Over Thanksgiving Weekend, which has a little something for everyone. Reviewing New Movies on “Good Morning Texas”

It isn’t easy to watch myself on TV. Sometimes, I talk too fast and forget things. Other times, I mispronounce actors’ names or use words that don’t exist. Today, I managed to do all four on Good Morning Texas, and even worked in the word “fictitional.” Nope, it’s not a word. I did, however, get to review new movies like Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, Arrival, and Manchester By the Sea. I also got to talk about some upcoming flicks I’m jazzed about, like Nocturnal Animals and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Click HERE to watch the segment. Special THANKS to Pete Delkus, who joined Jane McGarry and I in our movie-chat. Sorry I went total FAN GIRL on you, Delkus!

Oscar Contenders to See this November

I can’t tell you how much I love this time of year. There’s a chill in the air (OK, not really but there’s the promise of one), PSLs are everywhere and I can no longer take my youngest to Walgreen’s because their scary Halloween decorations are out. The BEST part about this time of year though, is how the movie studios start releasing GREAT FILMS. Yes, Oscar Season is right around the corner and it’s packed with movies you currently know nothing about. Some of the films getting the most Oscar Buzz will be released next month, which is why I compiled this list of Oscar Contenders to See this November. Continue reading →

PODCAST: The “Julie Says So” Movie Review of THE FINEST HOURS

I sat down with Rebekah Black and Film Critic Matt Mungle (The Mungle Show) after watching Chris Pine’s new movie, The Finest Hours. If you have any plans to see it, you should probably listen to our podcast first. You should also try forgive us for the trash we talked while taping it. I started off by gossiping about a Casey Affleck lawsuit I couldn’t entirely remember (here’s the story: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20404992,00.html) and then we said some really nasty stuff about Chris Pine’s performance. Oh yeah, we’re going straight to Hell for that one. We also laughed so hard that I repeatedly scared the other people sitting in the Food Court, so sorry about that. Here’s our review and watch out because SPOILER ALERT!
