Charlize Theron

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See Charlize Theron in “Tully” EARLY & FOR FREE

My kids are a little older and I occasionally see things that make me grateful for that.
Just today, I was enjoying a quiet walk by the lake when I came across a Mom who was screaming at four kids, all around three-years-old. She was furious and exhausted but, not matter what she said, those little monsters kept riding their trikes through the mud. A block past her was another Mom, who was trying to leave the park while her tiny daughter threw an impressive fit, flat on her back. I saw a woman at the mall an hour later, who’s pregnant belly was so big, it looked like she could burst and go flying around the Food Court, like a popped balloon.
The trailer for Tully also makes me so SO grateful that my kids are older.
Charlize Theron plays a Mom who’s just trying to get through those difficult early-years because…well, they can be kind of awful. Her brother surprises her with a night-nurse named Tully, who helps ease her around the tough spots. Yes, it’s a simple plot that doesn’t sound that intriguing, but watch the trailer below. If you can get through it without tearing up, then maybe your new-Mommy years were much easier than mine. If, on the other hand, it resonates with you the way it did with me, Continue reading →

The Miracle Season

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “The Miracle Season” EARLY & FOR FREE

Did you know that Volleyball is a monstrous craze for girls? I didn’t either until my daughters reached around 9-years-old and started asking about it. Apparently all the girls their age were playing so, of course, they had to play too. There are Girls’ Volleyball teams and leagues EVERYWHERE and some families spend all their free time sitting on bleachers, watching their girls play. Seriously. I have friends who spend entire weekends, watching games while sipping vodka cocktails out of Yeti coffee mugs. If you are one of them, The Miracle Season might not be for you, but I bet your daughters would love it.
This one tells the true story of a high school volleyball team that has to rebuild after the death of it’s star player. The Miracle Season stars Erin Moriarty (Kings of Summer, Captain Fantastic) and Helen Hunt (you know who Helen Hunt is) and looks like it’s going to be a real tear-jerker. It’s also a film with a positive message that targets young girls, and we simply don’t see enough of those.

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Ready Player One” EARLY & FOR FREE

If you aren’t excited about Ready Player One, I don’t even know what to say.
It’s directed by Steven Spielberg and is based on the popular novel by Austin’s own Ernest Cline. It stars Texan Tye Sheridan as a kid who has to save a virtual-reality world that’s drenched in ’80’s pop-culture. That means you should watch for references from Back to the Future to The A-Team to those awesome flowerpot hats that Devo wore. If you’re still not excited, then you probably shouldn’t bother with these passes to see Ready Player One EARLY and FOR FREE. Continue reading →

Isle of Dogs

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Isle of Dogs” EARLY & FOR FREE

Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox is a big movie for my family. We’ve watched it soooo many times and throw quotes like, “You cussing with me,” and “HOT BOX” around on a regular basis. That’s why we’re all going a little nuts about Isle of Dogs, which hits theaters March 23rd. This one’s about a kid in Japan who loses his dog and has to find it on an island that’s entirely populated by dogs. I know. It’s so Wes Anderson that I feel like Bill Murray just walked up and whacked me with a roll of eclectic wallpaper. It’s probably going to be great though and, if you’re like me, you kind of have to see every movie Wes Anderson makes anyhow. So, want to see Isle of Dogs EARLY and FOR FREE? Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See Alicia Vikander in “Tomb Raider” EARLY & FOR FREE

Have you noticed how many bad-ass women there are in movies right now? I’d hate to call it a TREND because I don’t want to see it go away, but I think Wonder Woman might have shaken movies execs awake. Since then, we’ve seen Charlize Theron play a lady-John Wick in Atomic Blonde, Tessa Thompson as a Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, and ALL the women of Black Panther kick tremendous ass. That’s why it seems highly appropriate to introduce Alicia Vikander as our new Laura Croft in Tomb Raider. Vikander is tiny, but she wanted to be taken seriously in the role of video-adventurer so she bulked up with weight training and performed her own stunts. See? Total bad-ass! So, do you want to see the new Tomb Raider EARLY and FOR FREE? Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Sherlock Gnomes” EARLY & FOR FREE

I should probably be embarrassed by how many times I watched 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet with my kids. That goofy little flick about garden gnomes (James McAvoy and Emily Blunt) from two feuding tribes who fall in love was just sweet enough to pull me in. It had the benefit of a great Elton John soundtrack as well, and was (sadly) my kids’ first introduction to Benny & the Jets. Plus, I’m so sweet on James McAvoy that just his voice is enough to make me swoon. Gnomeo & Juliet didn’t end like the classic it’s based on, so our star-crossed lovers are back and this time, they have to solve the mystery of missing garden gnomes. Johnny Depp joins the cast as Sherlock Gnomes and, even better, Elton John is back to Executive-Produce and help with the soundtrack. So, who want passes to see Sherlock Gnomes EARLY and FOR FREE? Love, Simon/ Queer Eye

FREE PASSES to “Love Simon” (& a quick review of Netflix’s “Queer Eye”)

I promise I’ll get around to talking about Love, Simon in just a minute. First though, I want to talk about this new Netflix show that my kids and I can’t get enough of. It’s Queer Eye, which is an updated version of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy from 2003. I didn’t expect to like this new cast as much as the original, but I’ll be damned if they don’t have me and my daughters happy-crying on nightly basis. In fact, we were watching last night when they helped a young man who wanted to come out to a family member (apparently they don’t just help straight guys these days). In a show of solidarity, each of the Queer Eye hosts talked about their own difficulties coming out to friends and family. It was incredible, imagining that these confident, sparkling men could ever be insecure or scared. Once again, I was crying but it also made me especially excited about Love, Simon. This movie tells the story of a high-school boy (Nick Robinson from Jurassic World and The Kings of Summer) who struggles to share his long-held secret, and I think the Queer Eye guys would love it! If you would love it too, Continue reading →

Wrinkle

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “A Wrinkle in Time” EARLY & FOR FREE

My kids are bigger cynics than I am, when it comes to movies.
They see almost as many films as I do and have had their hearts broken by more than one (read Emma’s review of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children HERE for a taste of that). The girls know that it’s often best to keep your expectations low, which might be why I’m struggling to get them excited about A Wrinkle in Time. They enjoyed the book by Madeleine L’Engle, but know how hard it is for movies to live up to the originals. They’re too young to appreciate Ava DuVernay and how cool it is that she’s directing this, or to understand why I’m excited to see Mindy Kaling on the big screen. In fact, the only person my kids are pumped about seeing in A Wrinkle in Time is Oprah Winfrey, but it might be because of her I Love Bread vine.

It doesn’t really matter because I’m making them see A Wrinkle in Time with me anyhow and YOU CAN TOO, thanks to this stack of FREE MOVIE PASSES I just got! Continue reading →
