I had so many great movies to review this week, that I decided to go ahead and record a podcast with all 3 of them. I’ve also got a rundown of what’s coming up next week AND all the free movie passes I’m giving away on my website. ENJOY!
I saw the movie Spotlight a few months ago and have been talking about it ever since. You think I’m kidding? Ask a friend of mine, ANY FRIEND OF MINE and they will tell you that I can’t shut up about Spotlight. Why? Because it’s awesome…a damn near PERFECT movie, that’s why. One you will definitely hear mentioned on Oscar night, as well. Yeah, THAT’S how good it is.
Spotlight is about the Boston Globe reporters who discovered a massive Catholic Church cover-up. They were the ones who told the world about predatory priests and how they were being protected by their churches. It’s based on actual events (isn’t every good movie right now?) and yes, you will probably be angry all over again when you walk out of the theater. You’ll also be happy though, because you paid nothing to see one of the best movies of 2015!
All you have to do is click HERE to grab your free movie passes. I actually begged for these because I figured it was a nice way to pay back everyone who had to listen to me blab on and on about Spotlight. Take a minute to watch the trailer too because damn…even IT is phenomenal!
I’m pretty sure that, given the chance, Sandra Bullock and I would be BEST FRIENDS.
I can just imagine her coming over to my house, where we’d play UNO and talk about boys while our kids played basketball in the driveway. Maybe I’d open some wine and she’d braid my hair while we prank called Melissa McCarthy. Then we’d watch Love Potion #9 together and she’d tell me all about the celebrities she’s slept with and rate their performance.
What? Did I make it weird?
Well, it doesn’t matter because the closest any of us will be getting to Sandra Bullock is when her next movie, Our Brand Is Crisis comes out October 30th. Bullock plays a political strategist who retires due to a scandal, then returns to fight her nemesis, played by Billy Bob Thornton.
The cool thing about Our Brand Is Crisis is that George Clooney produced it and was supposed to play the main character. He gave it to Sandy instead when she told him how frustrated she was about the lack of solid female roles. That’s a pretty cool friend, isn’t it? I wonder if those two have ever hooked up? Am I making it weird again?
Well, I have free passes to see Our Brand Is Crisis at the Angelika in Dallas next week. Just click HERE to snag those and don’t forget to show up a little early in case there’s a line. I’ll be there too, so maybe WE can braid each other’s hair and talk about boys. Ooo, and do YOU have Melissa McCarthy’s phone number? Because I’d REALLY like to prank call her.
Room stars Brie Larson as a woman who is held captive in a 10-by-10 foot space with her young son. She does everything she can to help him lead a normal life, until the day they try to escape. This brings mother and son to the biggest challenge they’ve ever faced: the outside world.
Room is based on the best-selling novel of the same name, written by Emma Donoghue. It’s a work of fiction, but Donoghue based her book on the harrowing true stories of Jaycee Dugard and Elisabeth Fritzi. Both of these women were kidnapped and held in hidden rooms for years. They were also repeatedly raped and eventually gave birth while still in captivity.
The big screen version of Room is already getting Oscar buzz, specifically for Brie Larson’s performance. It also won the Toronto International Film Festival this year, which has a history of picking Academy Award Best Picture contenders. There’s even a fair amount of Oscar chatter for young Jacob Tremblay, who plays the movie’s 5-year-old boy.
Best of all, I have free passes to see Room and guess who’ll be sitting in the audience with you? Author Emma Donoghue will be at the screening too, so make sure you stick around for the Q&A after the movie. Take a minute to watch the trailer, then print out your pass to get in. You should probably bring some tissues too because this one looks like a weeper!

I’m always looking for cool “grown-up” movies that I can take my kids to. YES, we see every Disney or Pixar or Disney-Pixar movie that comes out but I think it’s fun to find things we can ALL appreciate. That usually negates scary movies because if they’re worth the ticket price, they’re going to be too scary for my kids.
That’s the reason I’ve been SO EXCITED about Goosebumps! It’s a scary movie made FOR KIDS and it’s rated PG! Jack Black stars as real-life author R.L. Stine, who created the Goosebumps book-series back in the early ’90s. Stine is magical in the movie though, and his fictional monsters leap off the page as they’re written. It’s scary but not TOO SCARY and even better, you don’t have to worry about profanity or bizarre nudity (I’m still scarred from The Visit!).
Best of all, I HAVE FREE PASSES TO SEE GOOSEBUMPS! Just click HERE to snag yours and then take a look at the trailer. Wait, are those evil garden gnomes? OK, that might actually give me nightmares!
Pan is the big-screen origin story of Peter Pan, which promises to explain how he came to Neverland in the first place. If you’re anything like my daughters and I, you’ve been WAITING for this movie for what seems like AGES. It was sometime last year when we first saw the Pan trailer and excitedly whispered “WE HAVE TO SEE THAT,” to each other. The release date was repeatedly pushed back (not usually a good sign) but Pan is finally coming to theaters October 9th. You get to see it before everyone else though and for FREE because you know ME! Just click HERE to grab your passes and then watch the trailer below. Oooo, and who is that foxy, young Captain Hook???

Freeheld is based on the true story of New Jersey Detective Laurel Hester (played by Julianne Moore), who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. She fought the legal system so her pension could be left to her domestic partner Stacie Andree (Ellen Page), but county officials conspired to keep her from doing so. This sounds like the makings of an Oscar contender, doesn’t it? It’s even based on an Oscar-winning short documentary. Best of all, you can see Freeheld for FREE! All you have to do is click HERE to snag those passes, then take a moment to watch the trailer. Looks like you should probably take some Kleenex to this one, too. (sniff!)

If you have children, you were probably forced to see Hotel Transylvania with them back in 2012. Fortunately for all of us, the Adam Sandler-Selena Gomez flick ended up being sweet and pretty darn fun to watch. This time around, Dracula has to keep his daughter and grandson from moving away from the hotel and leaving him all alone (sad-bat-face). It features the voices of great folks like Andy Samberg and Steve Buscemi again, but this time Mel Brooks joins the cast as Dracula’s Dad. That ALONE makes Hotel Transylvania 2 worth watching! Take a look at the trailer below and click HERE for your free passes. The screening is THIS UPCOMING SATURDAY so make your plans and I’ll see you there!

This is kind of a dreadful time of year, isn’t it? Summer is OVER but it’s still hot and doesn’t feel like FALL yet. Kids are grouchy about back-to-school homework and parents are even grouchier about helping them with it. New TV shows have yet to start and though we keep seeing ads for GREAT NEW MOVIES, none of them are in theaters yet. Fortunately, that’s all about to change because I HAVE FREE MOVIE PASSES! You can see Sleeping with Other People, starring Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie as college f-buddies who reconnect at a meeting for Sex Addicts. It’s produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay and is being compared to When Harry Met Sally, but with lots of racy sex scenes. Sounds like a great way to kill that pre-Fall boredom and get out of the house, right? Even better, the screening is at the Angelika in Dallas on September 23rd, so we can get drinks in the bar beforehand! Print out the pass below to get you and a buddy in for free and I’ll see you there! Just don’t touch me during those intense sex scenes or things will get really awkward.
You might think that the whole Sleeper-Super-Agent idea but has been done to death, but Hollywood found a legitimate way to update it. What if the Sleeper-Agent in question grew up to be a slacker-stoner who lived with his girlfriend and smoked out all day? Jesse Eisenberg plays Mike, who works at a convienent store until the day he is activated. Imagine his surprise when he discovers he’s a deadly weapon who can kill people with little more than a spoon. Kristen Stewart plays his girlfriend Phoebe, who has to call on her own inner-tough-girl to help Mike survive when he becomes the target.
I can’t help but get excited about this because I’ve loved Jesse Eisenberg since Zombieland. I also relish any moment that Kristen Steward seems likeable. Sorry but I couldn’t stand her as “Bella.” I always wonder if the reason everyone hates Stewart so much is because “Bella” was such a crappy character. Maybe she’s awesome in real life but was simply forced to play an awful role for too long. Well, it’s not like she and I will have a “Girls Night” anytime soon so I guess I’ll never know.
The point I’m trying very poorly to make is that I have free passes to see American Ultra next week! Click HERE for those and then take a minute to watch the trailer. See you at the screening and I’ll let you know if that Julie/Kristen Date-Night happens anythime soon.
