Charlize Theron

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See Charlize Theron in “Tully” EARLY & FOR FREE

My kids are a little older and I occasionally see things that make me grateful for that.
Just today, I was enjoying a quiet walk by the lake when I came across a Mom who was screaming at four kids, all around three-years-old. She was furious and exhausted but, not matter what she said, those little monsters kept riding their trikes through the mud. A block past her was another Mom, who was trying to leave the park while her tiny daughter threw an impressive fit, flat on her back. I saw a woman at the mall an hour later, who’s pregnant belly was so big, it looked like she could burst and go flying around the Food Court, like a popped balloon.
The trailer for Tully also makes me so SO grateful that my kids are older.
Charlize Theron plays a Mom who’s just trying to get through those difficult early-years because…well, they can be kind of awful. Her brother surprises her with a night-nurse named Tully, who helps ease her around the tough spots. Yes, it’s a simple plot that doesn’t sound that intriguing, but watch the trailer below. If you can get through it without tearing up, then maybe your new-Mommy years were much easier than mine. If, on the other hand, it resonates with you the way it did with me, Continue reading →

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Rampage” EARLY & FOR FREE

Honestly, the first time I saw the trailer for Dwayne Johnson’s new movie Rampage, I thought it was a joke. I mean, The Rock has a pet gorilla that goes radioactive and starts destroying a city? Then a giant, flying werewolf gets involved and the only person who can save us is, of course, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? It just SOUNDS like something from Saturday Night Light, right? But I felt the same way about San Andreas when I saw the trailer, and I ended up liking that movie. I also rolled my eyes so hard it hurt when I saw The Rock in the new Jumanji trailer, and I kind of loved that one. So who knows? Maybe Rampage will end up being fantastic, but we should probably see it FOR FREE, just in case. Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Ready Player One” EARLY & FOR FREE

If you aren’t excited about Ready Player One, I don’t even know what to say.
It’s directed by Steven Spielberg and is based on the popular novel by Austin’s own Ernest Cline. It stars Texan Tye Sheridan as a kid who has to save a virtual-reality world that’s drenched in ’80’s pop-culture. That means you should watch for references from Back to the Future to The A-Team to those awesome flowerpot hats that Devo wore. If you’re still not excited, then you probably shouldn’t bother with these passes to see Ready Player One EARLY and FOR FREE. Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See Alicia Vikander in “Tomb Raider” EARLY & FOR FREE

Have you noticed how many bad-ass women there are in movies right now? I’d hate to call it a TREND because I don’t want to see it go away, but I think Wonder Woman might have shaken movies execs awake. Since then, we’ve seen Charlize Theron play a lady-John Wick in Atomic Blonde, Tessa Thompson as a Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, and ALL the women of Black Panther kick tremendous ass. That’s why it seems highly appropriate to introduce Alicia Vikander as our new Laura Croft in Tomb Raider. Vikander is tiny, but she wanted to be taken seriously in the role of video-adventurer so she bulked up with weight training and performed her own stunts. See? Total bad-ass! So, do you want to see the new Tomb Raider EARLY and FOR FREE? Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Thoroughbreds” EARLY & FOR FREE

Look, I’m going to be completely honest with you.
I’m not sure about Thoroughbreds. I don’t know how I feel about giving away passes to a movie featuring angry, gun-toting kids. Especially with the way the world looks right now. I don’t want to promote anything that glorifies violence, but I also realize that’s exactly what most movies do.
So how do I handle this?
I guess I’ll just let you decide for yourselves.
Thoroughbreds stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke as teenagers who concoct a plan to rid the world of their greatest problem; an evil stepfather. It looks like a combination of Heathers and my current favorite Netflix show, The End of the F***ing World. Those are violent as well, but have deeper messages about the way we torment each other and finding comfort in someone who’s just as messed up as you. I’m hoping that’s the category Thoroughbreds falls into.
So, who wants to see Thoroughbreds EARLY and FOR FREE? Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See Natalie Portman in “Annihilation” EARLY & FOR FREE

If you’re a fan of the Southern Reach book series, then you already know what Annihilation is about. If you’re like the rest of us who AREN’T familiar with the books, you’ll probably watch this trailer and think, “What tha HELL is going on here?”
Natalie Portman stars as a woman who joins a dangerous expedition in hopes of saving her husband. That’s really all I could figure out, other than there’s something that looks like a bubble over everything that’s turning people into monsters. The coolest thing about Annihilation though, is the cast. Watch the trailer below and tell me what YOU think is different about it. Then grab passes to see Annihilation EARLY and FOR FREE Continue reading →

Phantom Thread

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Phantom Thread” EARLY & FOR FREE

Set in 1950’s post-war London, Phantom Thread tells the story of a renowned fashion designer whose life is turned upside down when he falls in love with a strong-willed woman.
Sounds pretty meh, right?
Well, what if I told you that Phantom Thread is the latest from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson, the same guy who did Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood? It also stars Daniel Day-Lewis and is the first time he and Anderson have worked together since There Will Be Blood won two Oscars. Daniel Day-Lewis even co-wrote the Phantom Thread script with Paul Thomas Anderson AND, if you are still for some reason not intrigued by this, you should know that Day-Lewis plans to retire after this film.
From acting.
What, you’re still not interested?
Then you probably shouldn’t snag any passes to see Phantom Thread EARLY and FOR FREE. Continue reading →

PADDINGTON 2

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Paddington 2” EARLY & FOR FREE

Did you know that the new Paddington movie is currently one of the highest rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes? Yep, Paddington 2 is currently sitting at 100%, which means that 0% of the critics who’ve reviewed it have found anything negative to say about it. If you take a look at the Paddington 2 reviews (you can do that HERE), you’ll find quotes like,
“…might well be a staple of festive television for years to come,”
or “Paddington 2 won’t save the world, sadly, but it’s existence makes everything just that tiny bit better and more, well, bearable.”
There’s also this little bon mot:
“Unless you’re dead inside, you will not fail to be utterly charmed by Paddington 2.”
Sounds like those of us who aren’t dead inside should be excited!
I haven’t seen Paddington 2 yet, but I plan to do so soon and would love it if you’d join me. Continue reading →

Bale & Studi

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Hostiles” EARLY & FOR FREE

Are you sick of the Holly Jolly B.S. of the holidays? Has the forced emotion and financial blood-letting of the season left you hollow inside, with just a simmering hint of rage?
Oh NOT ME, of course! I’m just peach-fuzzy over the tree-that-has-to-come-down, the extra six pounds I’m now carrying and staggering blankness of my bank account. No, I’m talking about all the other people who want to get back to work just so they can start repairing the wallet-damage that’s been done.
I suspect that Hostiles is the movie for all of you people (re: Us).
It stars Christian Bale as an 1892 Army captain who must escort a Cheyenne chief and his family through dangerous territory. Rosamund Pike and Wes Studi also star in what’s highly likely to end up on the Oscar’s short-list. Continue reading →

Wilson, Simmons, Helms

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Father Figures” EARLY & FOR FREE

I get the text below from my friends all the time:
Hey, I’m going to the movies. What should I see?
I always respond with my favorite films that are currently out. I tell them about the 7 Golden Globe nominations that The Shape of Water got or about the gorgeous scenery in Call Me By Your Name. I’ll remind them about Frances McDormand’s powerful performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri or that they could just watch the phenomenal Mudbound at home, on Netflix.
I’ll give them my list of Best Movies Out Now, but when I run into them later and ask what they saw, it’s ALWAYS the goofiest movie out.
When I ask WHY they chose that one, they always say,
“I just wanted something that would make me laugh.”
Look, I haven’t seen Father Figures yet. This story about two men (Owen Wilson and Ed Helms) searching for the father that their mother (Glenn Close) said was dead just might be Oscar worthy. Christopher Walken, Ving Rhames and Harry Shearer just might give the performances of their lives. Or, maybe Father Figures is simply the perfect Just-Make-Me laugh movie for you. Continue reading →
