Ocean's 8

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Ocean’s 8” EARLY & FOR FREE

Dammit, this movie had better be good.
Sorry, but I’ve got some mounting concerns about Ocean’s 8, even as I watch Sarah Paulson calmly promote it on TV. Every time Sandra Bullock shows up looking sheik and relaxed on some late-night talk show, I tell myself that I’ll probably love Ocean’s 8. I smile as a sparkling Cate Blanchett plugs the movie and chugs beer with Jimmy Fallon, but in my heart I think, “Please…don’t let this movie suck.”
Because Ocean’s 8 can’t be just another Ocean’s movie with famous women in place of famous men. It can’t be a well-shot fashion show where glamorous women smirk as they rob other glamorous women. It has to be smart. It has to be funny. It has to tell a story we haven’t seen before and more importantly, Ocean’s 8 needs to make a statement about women and where we stand today.
And, if I was being completely honest, I’d admit that I need Ocean’s 8 to be even better than the Ocean’s movies that came before it.
No small task, right?
So, who wants to see Ocean’s 8 EARLY and FOR FREE? Continue reading →

MOMMY-MOVIE-REVIEW: My Daughters Discuss “Alice Through the Looking Glass” (through Lucy’s hiccups)

My kids are turning into tougher film critics than I am.

I gave them a lecture recently, about how hundreds of people have been listening to their reviews and basing their movie choices on them. This must have made a big impact on my girls because they didn’t pull any punches for Alice Through the Looking Glass. This is in spite of the free cookies they got at the screening.
Have a listen to their review below and remember that Alice Through the Looking Glass opens in theaters May 27th.

MOVIE REVIEW: The New “Cinderella” & Cate Blanchett as the Original Mean Girl

A quick GOOGLE search will tell you that a “Cinderella Complex” describes a woman who isn’t capable of changing her bad situation. She needs to be rescued by a man. I’m very familiar with this term because my mother warned my sister and I about it when we were young. We would read the Disney Princess stories and then discuss the elaborate weddings we’d have with our own beautiful, wealthy Princes.

“YOU have a Cinderella Complex,” Mom would say and even though we were little and didn’t know what it meant, it effectively killed the fantasy. Continue reading →
