CITY HIKES: The Shortest Hike EVER at The Fort Worth Nature Center

The Fort Worth Nature Center is one of my favorite places to hike in North Texas. I took my kids to check it out last year on one of those weird COOL summer days. We WENT because we’d heard about the Greer Island Goat Man who supposedly roams the preserve and terrorizes teenagers. You can read more about HIM by clicking HERE. Continue reading →

SPRING BREAK 2015: FOG, RAIN & HUMAN REMAINS

Our Spring Break trip was jinxed from the start.

The downward spiral started one hour into the drive when we hit stand-still traffic. Power lines had fallen across the highway so it was closed in both directions. People got out of their cars to stand in the road and stare angrily at the stopped traffic in front of them. This turned our 5.5 hour trip to Arkansas into an 8 hour drive. The rain found us not long after the traffic jam and followed us for 2 straight days. Fog joined the party as we drove up the mountain and we were soon socked in like a creepy Stephen King story. CITY HIKES: CEDAR HILL STATE PARK (With the Dreaded Rattlesnake Alley & Caveman Crossing)

My tour of DFW Hiking Trails took me south of Dallas today to Cedar Hill. The GPS said I had an hour-long drive ahead of me but it was much shorter than that. Cedar Hill State Park is actually only 20 miles from downtown Dallas and 30 miles from downtown Fort Worth (according to their website¬†http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hill). We made it in about 40 minutes and I say WE because I got to bring a buddy today! Several friends have asked to join me on these hikes (Come on! The more the merrier! Plus I’ll need someone to carry me when I inevitably step on a rattlesnake). Today Shannon made the trip with me. Shannon is tons of fun and a fast-walker (Dang woman, SLOW DOWN!) but she also brought along a weapon, “Just in case.” It was a heavy black stick on a key-chain so I renamed it her “Bitch Stick.” Continue reading →

CITY HIKES: Cedar Ridge Preserve

One of my 2015 New Year’s Resolutions was to exercise outside more often and one of my FAVORITE outdoor activities is hiking. Unfortunately, living in the city doesn’t afford many hiking options. At least, that’s what I THOUGHT until I searched “Hiking in DFW” and found loads of trails that I’d never even heard of. I decided to try these trails and blog about what I find, at least until it gets too hot to do anything outside. (Honestly, I’m also scouting a location for my daughters birthday because she decided she wants a “Bigfoot Party.” Speaking of which, does anyone have a gorilla suit & a tall man I can borrow?)
