“Where’d You Go, Bernadette” – Fans of the BOOK Review the MOVIE

Have you ever wondered how film critics get to see movies before everyone else? Well, early screenings are usually held to promote the film’s release, but sometimes those screenings occur on the same damn night. That’s what happened this week with Where’d You Go, Bernadette? and Good Boys, so I had to chose one. I desperately needed a Comedy and picked the latter while some girlfriends offered to cover Bernadette for me. I’m tempted to NOT share their review though, because it’s far funnier than anything I’ve ever written. Well, read it anyhow and remember that I do have my funny moments (they’re just few and far between).

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Where’d You Go, Bernadette?” EARLY & FOR FREE

I hate to admit it, but I don’t read much anymore. I’m about 100 pages into 3 different books at the moment, with no real plans to finish ANY of them. In fact, the last book I loved enough to finish was Where’d You Go, Bernadette so I’m thrilled they’ve made it into a movie! The cast is fantastic as well, with Kristen Wiig, Judy Greer & Lawrence Fishburne joining Cate Blanchett in the title role. Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Downsizing” EARLY & FOR FREE

What if you could become a multi-millionaire in a matter of minutes, but only if you shrunk yourself to the size of a toothbrush? Your money problems would be washed away and you might never have to work again, but you’d spend the rest of your life living in a doll-sized world. Would you do it? Could you leave everything you knew and loved behind and begin the life of your dreams, by Downsizing?
These are just some of the questions writer/director Alexander Payne asks in his latest movie, Downsizing. Matt Damon stars as Paul, a man who decides to escape the monotony and financial distress of his life by Downsizing, but it sends him on a journey he never could have expected. Kristen Wiig plays his apprehensive wife Audrey and Christoph Waltz is his extravagant new neighbor, Dusan. Newcomer Hong Chau steals the whole show as a housekeeper who has an unexpected past.

Reviewing “mother!” & “First They Killed My Father” (directed by Angelina Jolie) on GOOD MORNING TEXAS

Are you planning to see Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie mother! this weekend? If so, I highly recommend that you watch my mother! (yes, the lower-case “m” is intentional) review on Good Morning Texas first. There are several things you need to know about Darren Aronofsky’s latest before you start shelling out money for tickets. I also covered First They Killed My Father, which is based on a true story and directed by Angelina Jolie. Continue reading →

Mommy-Movie-Review: “Despicable Me 3”- This Time, A Villain Steals the SHOW

I took my kids to see Despicable Me 3 the other night, but I had to bribe them. The girls were so disinterested in Gru and the Minions this time around that they’d only see it if I smuggled brownies into the theater (sorry AMC!). I also had plenty of things that I’d rather do that night but I had to go because I am a Film Critic and Film Critics see movies. Even the ones they don’t want to see.

Fortunately for all three of us, Despicable Me 3 is far better than expected. It has all of the things we enjoyed in the earlier pictures (great animation, a sweet family story and Minions for DAYS) but this DM3 offers something even better.

It has what is quite possibly the BEST onscreen villain I’ve seen since Goldfinger:
The Brat. Continue reading →

When to IGNORE Film Critics (Written by a Film Critic)

I should probably explain myself, before I get in trouble for that title.
Yes, there are plenty of times when you should consult your favorite Film Critic. If you are on the fence about a movie or can’t decide about taking your kid to see it, then YES! Definitely see what they have to say. You should also check with Film Critics to find out about the NEW movies you should watch for (Have you seen Get Out yet? What the HELL are you waiting for???).
You SHOULD NOT, however, let a Film Critic change your mind about seeing a movie you’re excited about.
Case in point: Beauty and the Beast. Continue reading →

Movie Review Round-Up: DEEPWATER HORIZON, MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, QUEEN OF KATWE & MASTERMINDS

Feel like heading to the movies this weekend but don’t want to spend 2 hours watching something you hate? I can help with that. Here’s what’s opening this weekend and whether or not it’s worth your time.

Deepwater Horizon – This movie is completely split down the middle for me. The first half introduces us to the crew of the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, and informs us that something is horribly wrong. You won’t understand what that something horrible is (unless you have a background in drilling or maybe an Engineering Degree) and repeated attempts to explain it don’t help. Continue reading →
