Rapid Review: “Everything Everywhere All at Once”

A24

It was during a rare quiet moment in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once when a woman behind me said, “This movie is so stupid.”

She must have felt strongly about it because she said it again a half-hour later.

“Seriously…this movie is so stupid.”

She’s not entirely wrong either.

There are moments of blistering stupidity in Everything Everywhere All at Once, but they are sandwiched between broad, existential comments on love, parenting, and the way we view our own precious lives. It’s how this film manages to be absurd, grotesque, and brilliant all at the same time.

2022 Oscar Nominations on GOOD MORNING TEXAS

I was positively giddy about the 2022 Oscar Nominations that were just released! If you happened to catch me on WFAA‘s Good Morning Texas, you could probably tell by the way I struggled to find my words (not my finest performance, folks). If you didn’t see it, click HERE to watch the highlights and low-points of this years nominations. Remember, you can still find several of the nominated films on streaming services and follow my social media posts for updates about added theatrical runs.

Movies are BACK!

Movies are BACK!
We’re Back!

It’s been a long year. Hell, after Covid, I had decided to hang up my “Film Critic” hat and donate my giant purse (the one I use to smuggle candy and tiny wine bottles into screenings) to Goodwill. I even came this close to shutting down this website. Then I made an appearance on Good Morning Texas to give my Oscars predictions (watch that HERE if you want). It was the most “normal” I’d felt in a straight year and I loved it so much, I decided to load up the giant purse and don that hat again. I even have my first in-theater screening next week to see A Quiet Place Part 2! That will give me a better opportunity to see how theaters are operating in a Covid world but AMC, Cinemark, the Angelika and the Alamo Drafthouse have their protocols posted online. There will hopefully be Free Movie Screenings in our future but, for now, I’ll focus on the films that are opening in theaters soon like Cruella, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and, of course, Black Widow. I’ll kick off with a review of A Quiet Place Part 2 next week so have a look at the trailer below. Now, want to add anything to my giant purse?

Golden Globes

Golden Globes Predictions on “Good Morning Texas”

The Golden Globes have always been loosey-goosey (yes, that presenter is probably drunk) and they’ve been known to throw curve-balls in the past (I’m still not over that Bohemian Rhapsody win). This year, the race is especially tight with legends like Martin Scorcese, Al Pacino, Renee Zellwegger and Jennifer Aniston in the mix, but (relative) newcomers like Awkwafina, Bong Joon-Ho and Billy Porter might surprise them all. Click HERE to watch my Golden Globes predictions on WFAA Good Morning Texas, then tell me your own predictions in the Comments below. And check the Julie Says So Free Movie Passes page while you’re here, to score freebies to the next big Golden Globes winner!

The Julie Says So TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2017

I’m writing a TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2017 list, even though I suspect no one will ever read it. Honestly, I think I make “Best Of” lists just so I can look back at them years later and say, “Oh yeah…I forgot about that one.”
Or maybe now, “Oh yeah…that was back before So-n-So got busted for showing his business to coworkers and had to stop making movies.”
Let’s hope that no one on this current list will end up on that future one. Continue reading →

The Splash Effect: Movies From My Youth Are NOT OK For My Kids

It all started with Splash.

My kids were on a mermaid kick a few years ago so I decided to record the Daryl Hannah-Tom Hanks classic for them. What could be sweeter than a Disney flick about a lonely guy who falls in love with a mermaid? It just happened to be playing on HBO at the time so I taped it to show to my daughters. THANK GOD I was up late one night and decided to watch it without them. Do you remember what “Allen” and “Madison” did when they first met? Let’s just say that she was the horinest mermaid to ever grow legs. Continue reading →
