The French Dispatch: Is this Wes Anderson’s Cry for Help?

I should start by saying that, as a long-time devotee of Wes Anderson’s work, I thoroughly enjoyed The French Dispatch. It’s charming and beautiful in a way that only his movies are and, since it works through multiple vignettes, there’s a little something for every Wes Anderson fan.

That said, I simply can’t sit through another WA film without questioning his repetition. Those of us who watch every film he makes have certainly noticed his tendency to copy the cadence of his dialogue and similarly frame each scene. I understand that his oeuvre represents a style that has become a genre unto itself, but are we not limiting him as a filmmaker by accepting it?

Is it possible that Wes Anderson wants desperately to break all of his molds and try something new but doesn’t want to disappoint his fans? Or is he simply stuck?

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Father Figures” EARLY & FOR FREE

I get the text below from my friends all the time:
Hey, I’m going to the movies. What should I see?
I always respond with my favorite films that are currently out. I tell them about the 7 Golden Globe nominations that The Shape of Water got or about the gorgeous scenery in Call Me By Your Name. I’ll remind them about Frances McDormand’s powerful performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri or that they could just watch the phenomenal Mudbound at home, on Netflix.
I’ll give them my list of Best Movies Out Now, but when I run into them later and ask what they saw, it’s ALWAYS the goofiest movie out.
When I ask WHY they chose that one, they always say,
“I just wanted something that would make me laugh.”
Look, I haven’t seen Father Figures yet. This story about two men (Owen Wilson and Ed Helms) searching for the father that their mother (Glenn Close) said was dead just might be Oscar worthy. Christopher Walken, Ving Rhames and Harry Shearer just might give the performances of their lives. Or, maybe Father Figures is simply the perfect Just-Make-Me laugh movie for you. Continue reading →

Mommy-Movie-Review: “Cars 3” with My Kids (PODCAST)

I took my kids to see Cars 3 last night and we were all VERY surprised by it. My girls didn’t even want to see it, so the fact that this podcast isn’t eight straight minutes of them complaining is a SHOCK. Listen to the audio below to hear their thoughts and find out if YOU should see Cars 3. Keep checking the FREE MOVIE PASS page as well, to find out what I’m giving away next! Continue reading →

Movie Review Round-Up: DEEPWATER HORIZON, MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, QUEEN OF KATWE & MASTERMINDS

Feel like heading to the movies this weekend but don’t want to spend 2 hours watching something you hate? I can help with that. Here’s what’s opening this weekend and whether or not it’s worth your time.

Deepwater Horizon – This movie is completely split down the middle for me. The first half introduces us to the crew of the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, and informs us that something is horribly wrong. You won’t understand what that something horrible is (unless you have a background in drilling or maybe an Engineering Degree) and repeated attempts to explain it don’t help. Continue reading →

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “Masterminds” ON ME!

I think I’d watch anything with Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon in it. In fact, my current idea of HEAVEN would be the two of them narrating a nonstop loop of those Tasty videos. Yeah, but only the recipes that featured lots of cream cheese and canned biscuits!

While we’re waiting for that to magically happen, we can watch Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon in Masterminds. This one also stars Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, and Zach Galifianakis as an armored-car driver who steals 17 million dollars worth of cash. If you’d like to see Masterminds EARLY and FOR FREE, just click HERE, then watch the trailer below. Man, Masterminds is based on actual events, but I hope just LOOSELY!

MOVIE REVIEWS: “Zoolander 2” & “How to Be Single”

Isn’t it weird that this Valentine’s Day, a bunch of Comedies are opening instead of Romances? Well, there’s that Nicholas Sparks flick The Choice, but everyone heard how awful it was and scratched it off their lists. Now, all the Film Critics are telling people to see Deadpool (and you should), but Zoolander 2 and How to Be Single are opening this weekend as well. Are they worth it? Should you skip a naked Ryan Reynolds and try one of those instead? Continue reading →

PODCAST: “Zoolander 2” Review (Everything’s Better With Jell-O Shots)

Some very special guests joined Rebekah Black and I at the Zoolander 2 screening last night. My good friends Kristen and Bobby Lonnergan came along, as well as long-time Movie-Buddy, Kristi Bernstein. I love bringing Kristi to screenings because she always fills her purse with movie treats before leaving the house. She provided Mardi Gras themed Jell-O shots last night, and I’m proud to say we polished them off before the movie even started. That’s why the podcast below is a little rowdier than usual. Thanks for listening to our Zoolander 2 review and WARNING: Don’t listen to this one with the kids around. I spilled a few dirty secrets about Owen Wilson. Enjoy!
