TOP 5 MOVIES to See with Your Kids Over Spring Break

My kids were out of school for Spring Break last week, so I’m actually late with this post. Forgive me, but I was simply too busy running around the beach, trying to convince myself it wasn’t cloudy and 65 degrees. Our break is earlier than most schools though, so you might still be planning yours. There’s always at least one cloudy Spring Break day that’s best spent in a theater, so here are my Top 5 to Films See with Your Kids over Spring Break:

5. My first pick is Miracles from Heaven, but this one comes with conditions. This is a faith-based movie (even produced by T.D. Jakes) so there’s lots of God Talk. If that makes you uncomfortable, prepare to be totally gooned out. Jennifer Garner stars and keeps it from getting too heavy-handed, so don’t scratch it off your list entirely. Miracles from Heaven is also based on the true story of a very sick little girl, which is often difficult to watch. It might be too much for more sensitive viewers, but it might be just right for your crew. Here’s a link to my original review, which was actually made by my daughters and some of their friends. Check it out first, if you can’t decide about the movie.

PODCAST: Hashing Out the 2016 Oscar Nominations on WCSX

I love talking to Trudi & Jim on WCSX in Detroit because they just let me GO. Other radio stations that I review movies for keep me under 10 minutes, then go back and edit me down. Some people have even told me to keep it under 3 minutes, which is next to impossible. My friends in Michigan, however, don’t give me time constraints which is why this little ditty clocks in at a half-hour. IT’S CRAZY, RIGHT? We discussed the highs and lows the the 2016 Oscar Nominations, and I had to pull the soap-box out a couple of times. You can listen to that by clicking HERE and make sure you check out Trudi & Jim any time you’re in Detroit, on 94.7 WCSX.

The BEST, WORST, & WEIRDEST of 2015 Film

I started compiling a list of my favorite 2015 movies, but it was really lame. I got bored just writing it so I can’t imagine how much it would suck for the poor person reading it. The last thing anyone wants right now is another dry Top 10 List, right? I have one, which I will post at the end of this, but it actually excluded some of the coolest theater experiences I had this year. That’s why I decided to compile a list of The Best, Worst and Weirdest of 2015 Film. Continue reading →

MOVIE REVIEWS: Celebrating “Movie Day” on Good Morning Texas!

We celebrated MOVIE DAY on Good Morning Texas this past Friday and it was INSANE! The “501st Legion” was there (people in FANTASTIC Star Wars costumes!) along with R2D2 and The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, who regaled us with the Star Wars theme song. I sat down with Jane McGarry and talked about all the big movies that are being released over the holidays, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Click HERE to see that and watch out for a Chewbacca/Luke Skywalker photobomb. The glowing lightsaber gives it away!

PODCAST: Chatting About the BEST of 2015 Movies (including that little “Star Wars” pic) with Krys Boyd on “Think”

I joined Krys Boyd on NPR’s Think yesterday, to discuss Star Wars: The Force Awakens and some of the other best movies of 2015. We were also joined by Chris Vognar from the Dallas Morning News and KERA’s Stephen Becker. They are both film nerds of the highest order so the pressure to perform well was pretty high. I was up for the challenge though, because I relish any chance to talk about movies with those guys. Click HERE to hear the show, and listen carefully for the moment Chris Vognar calls the rest of us children and when I debuted the word “porn-y” on NPR.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Teaser #2

MOVIE REVIEW: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”- You Really ARE Home, Chewy!

People talk about being transported all the time, but it’s rarely something that you actually feel. I felt it today though, when I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Within 60 seconds of the film’s start, I was utterly transported back to 1977, when I saw the first film I ever truly loved. Tears sprang to my eyes and chills ran down my arms. It was delicious. HEADS UP!- Sensory Friendly Screenings of “Alvin & the Chipmunks: Road Chip” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

Just got some fantastic news out of Wylie, Texas. B&B Theaters Wylie 12 are having sensory friendly screenings of Alvin & the Chipmunks: Road Chip AND Star Wars: The Force Awakens THIS SATURDAY. This means that they will keep the lights up and turn the sound down a bit, which is great for kids and adults who have a hard time with traditional theaters. No one is going to complain if someone makes a little noise or needs to move around, either. Both screenings will start at 9am and I’d get tickets early because they’ll probably sell out. Click HERE to see Alvin & the Chipmunks: Road Chip or HERE to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Have fun and remember to share the news with anyone who might be interested!
