Are you ready to head back to the theater? Some exciting films are coming out this month and not all of them will be available to stream. Watch my “July Movies” segment from Good Morning Texas HERE to find out what you can stream at home and what movies will require actual pants and shoes. Remember that screenings sell-out faster right now, due to socially-distanced seats, so make sure you buy those tickets in advance. And here’s a look at Matt Damon’s latest, Stillwater, which opens in theaters only July 30th.
I can’t honestly say I was that jazzed to hear they were making a new Predator movie. I mean, how many is that now? Maybe 6, including the Alien vs. Predator movies? It isn’t really a bandwagon I’ve ever jumped on, but then I saw the cast. Sterling K. Brown, Keegan-Michael Key, Olive Munn and Boyd Holbrook (sooo creepy in Logan) are all starring in it. Even little Jacob Tremblay (who should’ve gotten an Oscar nomination for his role in Room) is in The Predator, so it’s got to be kind of good, doesn’t it? Well, it won’t matter either way if we get to see it EARLY and FOR FREE. Continue reading →
I was on Good Morning Texas today talking about some of the biggest movies opening this month, including Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Uncle Drew and Sicario 2: Days of Soldado. I also gave my review of Incredibles 2, which opens THIS WEEKEND (find those tickets HERE).
Click HERE to watch the segment, then check my FREE MOVIE PASSES page to see if there are any left to see John Hamm in Tag. I’m still so jealous that Jane McGarry got to TOUCH him!
Imagine meeting the love of your life, who then asks you to sail across the ocean with him? Sounds pretty romantic doesn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what happened to Tami Oldham and it was just as beautiful as it sounds, until they sailed right into a massive hurricane. Oldham wrote a book about their journey, called Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss and Survival at Sea, which has been turned into the movie Adrift (starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin). It looks pretty incredible and, after her brilliant performance in Big Little Lies, I’d watch Shailene Woodley in anything. If you feel the same way, Continue reading →

If you think you don’t want to see War for the Planet of the Apes, you should probably do what I’m doing with my daughters this weekend; watch the first two movies again.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) were both lauded by critics (OK, Dawn way more so than Rise) and featured excellent performances by Andy Serkis. Those films set up a finale that, believe it or not, has already become one of the highest rated films of the summer. Even better, you get to see War for the Planet of the Apes EARLY and FOR FREE! I took my kids to see Despicable Me 3 the other night, but I had to bribe them. The girls were so disinterested in Gru and the Minions this time around that they’d only see it if I smuggled brownies into the theater (sorry AMC!). I also had plenty of things that I’d rather do that night but I had to go because I am a Film Critic and Film Critics see movies. Even the ones they don’t want to see.
Fortunately for all three of us, Despicable Me 3 is far better than expected. It has all of the things we enjoyed in the earlier pictures (great animation, a sweet family story and Minions for DAYS) but this DM3 offers something even better.
It has what is quite possibly the BEST onscreen villain I’ve seen since Goldfinger:
The Brat. Continue reading →
If you’re anything like me, you probably take your kids to see every age-appropriate movie as soon as it opens. It started as a way to keep the offspring occupied when they were tiny handfuls, but it’s blossomed into a full-fledged love of film that I get to share with my daughters. That’s why I love it when people ask me AND MY GIRLS about new releases. I got their help when putting together this list of our Top 5 Movies Worth Seeing Twice, because sometimes you’d rather spend your money on a sure thing. Continue reading →
My youngest daughter actually screamed when we left for school this morning. She was lugging her backpack to the car when a neighborhood kid pedaled past us on his bike. This guy must already be out of school because he was wearing swim trunks and flip flops, and whistled a happy tune as he whizzed past us. It was simply too much for Lucy, who has a week left of school, so she understandably screamed.
It’s this utter exhaustion and school-malaise that will speak to kids who see Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. Continue reading →
I was on Good Morning Texas today, talking about some big upcoming movies as well as reviewing a few others. If you’d like to find out what’s opening in July OR hear my thoughts on The Legend of Tarzan and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, just click HERE.
I also previewed a new scary movie called Lights Out, but unfortunately all the free passes I had to see it are gone. Apologies also to director David Sandberg for almost forgetting his name! I decided to make up for it by posting the original short film Lights Out is based on, but prepare yourself. It’s scary!
