PODCAST: Discussing the 2016 Oscars with Trudi & Jim on WCSX (aka “The Day I Got Dumped for Leonard Maltin”)

I talk to Trudi & Jim on WCSX Detroit all the time about movies. That’s why I was shocked and more than a little bummed when their Producer told me that they were going to talk to Leonard Maltin about the 2016 Oscars instead of me. I, being the Queen of Guilt-Trip Texts, sent him a few notes to acknowledge my hurt feelings and before long, I was on their schedule again. Truthfully, that wasn’t my plan but I’m glad it worked out that way. We had a fantastic conversation about the Oscar nominees and I completely trashed Maltin’s Oscar picks.

For the sake of full disclosure, I should tell you that I had Leonard Maltin confused with Gene Shalit through the whole interview. That might explain why I kept making jokes about his hair. Enjoy!

The (un)Official Drinking Game of the 2016 Oscars

The 2016 Oscars will air this Sunday at 7:30 Central and the world is can barely contain it’s excitement!

Okay, that’s not really true. Most people are apathetic about this year’s nominees and the #OscarSoWhite controversy threw even more cold water on everything. I thought I’d spice things up with a good old-fashioned Oscars Drinking Game, so we’d have something to do when we weren’t making fun of everyone’s gowns and make-up choices. Before we get good and drunk though, I think we should address the old, white elephant in the room with our very first rule.

RULE #1: Take a shot of plain water anytime emcee Chris Rock makes a joke about the lack of diversity amongst Oscar voters and nominees. I suspect he’ll be at it all night, so this would be a good opportunity to hydrate. Continue reading →

PODCAST: Movie Chat for 1/22/16 (“The 5th Wave,” “Dirty Grandpa,” & “Son of Saul”)

This week on the Podcast, I review The 5th Wave, Dirty Grandpa and Son of Saul. I’ll also talk about the #OscarSoWhite controversy, since Straight Outta Compton is now available on DVD. I’ll also answer some emailed questions about The Martian, because people are still asking me if it’s appropriate for kids. It really all depends on your kid…and just how much you swear around them. I’d also like to share this article with Scott from Dallas, who asked if I knew how solid the science behind The Martian is. Scott, bless your little heart for assuming I’m smart enough to answer that question. Instead, here’s an interview with Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, because HE would know! http://www.cbsnews.com/news/neil-degrasse-tyson-science-behind-the-martian/

The BEST, WORST, & WEIRDEST of 2015 Film

I started compiling a list of my favorite 2015 movies, but it was really lame. I got bored just writing it so I can’t imagine how much it would suck for the poor person reading it. The last thing anyone wants right now is another dry Top 10 List, right? I have one, which I will post at the end of this, but it actually excluded some of the coolest theater experiences I had this year. That’s why I decided to compile a list of The Best, Worst and Weirdest of 2015 Film. Continue reading →

PODCAST: Talking “The Martian” with Tony Zazza & Cheree

People ask me all the time if I still talk to Tony Zazza. He’s been my on-and-off radio husband for YEARS, but not all radio teams actually LIKE each other off-the-air. I actually DO like Tony though, and have kept in touch with him since he started a new morning show in Melbourne, Florida. He’s at WA1A 107.1 and you can listen to him online by clicking HERE.
I talk to Tony all the time, giving him updates on the radio-gossip around Texas while he tells me how awesome his new co-host, Cheree is. Whatever. (She’s actually really sweet, and pretty too…dammit.) Anyhow, Tony and Cheree have had me on a few times to talk about movies lately and I LOVE IT! It’s like having drinks with your ex-husband and his new wife. Wait, no it’s not like that AT ALL. In fact, Tony recorded our chat about The Martian so you can hear for yourself. You’ll probably want to buy advance tickets to The Martian too, since it’s sure to be a big-seller and you can do that by clicking HERE.

MOMMY-MOVIE-REVIEW: Is “The Martian” OK For My Kids?

The Martian stars Matt Damon as an astronaut who, through a series of unfortunate events, is left stranded on Mars. He has a limited amount of resources so he must use his wits and vast knowledge of science to survive. It doesn’t really sound like the makings of a best-selling book, much less a blockbuster movie, but that’s exactly what The Martian has become. It will also most likely be a contender once Oscar season kicks in and is already on the everyone’s short-list of Must See Movies. Even I gave it an A+ and called it an “instant classic,” but here’s the next question: Is The Martian okay for my kids? It IS rated PG-13 after all, so what will my children be shown while watching it, other than a man’s incredible struggle to survive?

I actually had this conversation with my daughters (ages 8 & 11) today because they are both DYING to see The Martian. There are 2 things working against parents like me though, who want to share this movie with their kids: The length and the language. Continue reading →

PODCAST: Boozy Movies Reviews “The Martian”

It’s been AGES since Boozy Movies got together for a movie and booze but we FINALLY did for The Martian. I have a few disclaimers though, before you listen to the podcast:
1) I say, about midway through the review, “That’s how smart guys are.” I meant to say “That’s how smart ASTRONAUTS are.” No, I don’t think that all men are smart enough to stay alive on Mars. Also,
2) Rebekah laughs about the movie He Named Me Malala at the end of the review but she DIDN’T KNOW WHAT IT WAS ABOUT. I told her after we stopped recording and she said, “Now I feel like a dick.” She isn’t. She’s actually really nice but I’m going to make her see He Named Me Malala with me anyway. Here’s our review and if you hear anything else in there that offends you, it was probably intended. ENJOY!
