There are two things you should know before reading my Joker review. Continue reading →
I feel a little anxious about giving away passes to see Joker, and it has nothing to do with how uncomfortable Joaquin Phoenix makes me feel on any given day. No, Joker makes me anxious because I’ve never screened a movie that the FBI and US Military have issued official warnings about. I don’t know why this particular film feels more dangerous than others, but the FBI thinks Joker has the potential to incite violence and is asking audiences to be especially aware of their surroundings when seeing it. What is it about the anti-hero? Why do we love him so much? What is it about watching a good guy go BAD that makes us want to cheer him on?
These are a few of the uncomfortable questions I asked myself while watching War Dogs. Director Todd Phillips has a background in comedy (The Hangover movies, Old School) so he poses these questions between chuckles, but the result is like holding a mirror up to our faces.
You thought that was funny? You want them to succeed in this horrible plan? Why?
War Dogs stars Miles Teller and Jonah Hill as two real-life buds who, through a shift in U.S. policies, become arms dealers. They’re able to smoke-and-mirror their way into a multi-million dollar business, but once the lies start, so does the downward spiral. A major lesson is being taught in War Dogs about the business of WAR and how shady deals are made on the regular. The audience is so caught up in the fun these guys are having though, that we don’t question their morality until everything starts to unravel. Continue reading →
War Dogs is one of those movies that I’m trying to NOT get excited about. Everything I hear about it makes that more difficult, though.
First of all, Jonah Hill and Miles Teller (two of my favorites) play 20-somethings who start dealing weapons and unexpectedly win a 300-million-dollar contract from the Pentagon. That’s a great start but it’s also directed by Todd Phillips, who did all of the Hangover movies. He brought along one of his favorites, Bradley Cooper, to play a shady businessman and who doesn’t love it when Cooper plays the bad guy? Best of all, the whole thing is based on a true story!
Aww, to Hell with it! Let’s go ahead and get all tingly, goose-bumpy excited about War Dogs! Grab your free passes by clicking HERE, then watch the trailer below. Seriously, War Dogs looks almost too good to be true!
