Dev Patel in "Lion"

MOVIE REVIEW (and FREE MOVIE PASSES): “Lion” is a Beautiful Gut Punch

Lion tells the true story of Saroo, who was only 5-years-old when he was lost and ended up thousands of miles away from his family. He spent the following months wandering the streets of Calcutta, searching for a mother whose name he did not know and a city he couldn’t properly pronounce. It took Saroo 25 years to finally get home, which he with the help of Google Earth and a great deal of luck.

Dev Patel stars in this true story but Sunny Pawar, who plays young Saroo, is the actor who stole my heart. It blows my mind when children, who are this young, are able to act so convincingly, and Pawar is consistently authentic. It makes watching him wander the streets, searching for food and dodging bad grown-ups, almost unbearable.

Saroo is eventually adopted and grows up living a charmed life in Australia. Despite this, he can never shake the ghosts of the mother and brother he lost. The second-half of Lion doesn’t offer the impact of the first (despite an ego-free and near perfect performance by Nicole Kidman), but it’s all barreling towards one phenomenal conclusion. –B

FREE MOVIE PASSES: See “War Dogs” ON ME!

War Dogs is one of those movies that I’m trying to NOT get excited about. Everything I hear about it makes that more difficult, though.

First of all, Jonah Hill and Miles Teller (two of my favorites) play 20-somethings who start dealing weapons and unexpectedly win a 300-million-dollar contract from the Pentagon. That’s a great start but it’s also directed by Todd Phillips, who did all of the Hangover movies. He brought along one of his favorites, Bradley Cooper, to play a shady businessman and who doesn’t love it when Cooper plays the bad guy? Best of all, the whole thing is based on a true story!

Aww, to Hell with it! Let’s go ahead and get all tingly, goose-bumpy excited about War Dogs! Grab your free passes by clicking HERE, then watch the trailer below. Seriously, War Dogs looks almost too good to be true!

ON YOUR RADAR: “Bridge of Spies” & “Scream Queens”

It’s kind of depressing to be on THIS side of Summer Movie Season, isn’t it? All the movies we were SO PUMPED to see have come and gone. What do we do now? Well, we should start getting jazzed about the NEW stuff headed our way, like Bridge of Spies. This movie is directed by Steven Spieldberg, stars Tom Hanks and was co-written by the Coen Brothers. There’s so much good stuff going on here that I kind of want to hate it. It reminds me of the really hot jock in high school that everyone was in love with. YOU wanted to hate him because everyone thought he was so perfect, then he smiled at you in the hallway and you swooned. Well, THAT’S how I feel about Bridge of Spies. It’s based on the true story an American lawyer who is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War. He must help rescue a pilot detained by the Soviet Union and YES, it will probably get Oscar nominations. Bridge of Spies opens October 16th. Continue reading →
