How you feel about Downhill will partly depend on whether you’ve seen the film it’s based on, Force Majeure. If you go in comparing it to that 2014 Swedish instant-classic, you’ll be sorely disappointed. If you’ve never seen the first, you’ll probably appreciate this tense but enjoyable film. Have you been meaning to watch Force Majeure ever since it landed on most critics’ Top 10 of the Decade lists? Well, you should still see the 2014 Swedish original, but Hollywood has made its own version called Downhill. It stars Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a couple who reexamines their marriage after a ski-resort incident and, even better, I have passes to see Downhill EARLY and FOR FREE! Isn’t it weird that this Valentine’s Day, a bunch of Comedies are opening instead of Romances? Well, there’s that Nicholas Sparks flick The Choice, but everyone heard how awful it was and scratched it off their lists. Now, all the Film Critics are telling people to see Deadpool (and you should), but Zoolander 2 and How to Be Single are opening this weekend as well. Are they worth it? Should you skip a naked Ryan Reynolds and try one of those instead? Continue reading →
Some very special guests joined Rebekah Black and I at the Zoolander 2 screening last night. My good friends Kristen and Bobby Lonnergan came along, as well as long-time Movie-Buddy, Kristi Bernstein. I love bringing Kristi to screenings because she always fills her purse with movie treats before leaving the house. She provided Mardi Gras themed Jell-O shots last night, and I’m proud to say we polished them off before the movie even started. That’s why the podcast below is a little rowdier than usual. Thanks for listening to our Zoolander 2 review and WARNING: Don’t listen to this one with the kids around. I spilled a few dirty secrets about Owen Wilson. Enjoy!
Wanna know a secret?
I’ve never seen Zoolander. I don’t know how the Hell it happened, but I somehow got this far in my life without seeing the Magnum, the Ferrari, or even THE BLUE STEEL. People are always shocked to hear this and in some ways, I feel like I shouldn’t even bother now. Maybe it could be my thing. Well, I’d better decide soon because the Zoolander 2 screening is this upcoming Tuesday and I’VE GOT FREE PASSES! Just click HERE for those and then watch the trailer below. Omigod, we have to go, just to watch Benedict Cumberbatch play ALL!
This is kind of a dreadful time of year, isn’t it? Summer is OVER but it’s still hot and doesn’t feel like FALL yet. Kids are grouchy about back-to-school homework and parents are even grouchier about helping them with it. New TV shows have yet to start and though we keep seeing ads for GREAT NEW MOVIES, none of them are in theaters yet. Fortunately, that’s all about to change because I HAVE FREE MOVIE PASSES! You can see Sleeping with Other People, starring Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie as college f-buddies who reconnect at a meeting for Sex Addicts. It’s produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay and is being compared to When Harry Met Sally, but with lots of racy sex scenes. Sounds like a great way to kill that pre-Fall boredom and get out of the house, right? Even better, the screening is at the Angelika in Dallas on September 23rd, so we can get drinks in the bar beforehand! Print out the pass below to get you and a buddy in for free and I’ll see you there! Just don’t touch me during those intense sex scenes or things will get really awkward.
We were REALLY excited about taping this podcast because we hadn’t seen each other in weeks. Maybe that’s why everything went south so fast. Maybe that’s why we drank more and cussed more and went places that we NEVER should have gone. Whatever the reason, it resulted in our FILTHIEST Wine ‘N Film Critics to date. Continue reading →
