The Fourth of July festivities are behind us and odds are you’re looking for something to do OUT of the heat for a few hours. Sounds like the perfect time for a movie so here are the Julie Says So Top 5 Movies to See Right Now!
5) John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
John Wick 3 won’t be in theaters much longer and it deserves a large screen. This one picks up right after John Wick 2 but is thankfully far better than its predecessor (possibly even better than the first). Gleefully violent and self-aware, John Wick 3 explains why Keanu Reeves is the internet’s favorite boyfriend right now. Read my original review here and seriously DON’T BOTHER if you are turned off by gratuitous bloodshed.
Didn’t get to take that exotic Scandinavian vacation you hoped for this summer? Midsommar will make you grateful for that, with its smiling cults and bloody paganism. Director Ari Aster keeps things surprisingly light as a handful of American anthropology students stumble into their worst nightmare. Steer clear if you didn’t like Ari Aster’s Hereditary…or bizarre sex rituals in general. Read my original review here.
3) Spider-Man: Far From Home
You can’t see Spider-Man: Far From Home until you’ve seen Avengers: Endgame. Sorry, those are just the rules but Endgame IS currently enjoying a re-release. Once you’ve made it through all 16 hours of that, watch Peter Parker battle baddies while on a European field trip with his adorable classmates. I wrote a Parent Review too, for those dealing with under-13 Marvel fans. Find that here.
Yesterday isn’t very good at explaining why everyone forgot The Beatles, but you’ll forgive that misstep once Himesh Patel starts singing the theme song. Screenwriter Richard Curtis (also responsible for Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Love Actually) gifts Yesterday with loads of dry, British wit and you’ll fall in love with the cast (including an understated Ed Sheeran). Plus telling people you “saw Yesterday last night” inevitability turns into a “who’s on first” routine. Read my original review here.
1) Toy Story 4
Toy Story 4 somehow pulled one more adventure out of these sentient toys and even introduced more soon-to-be-classic characters in the process. You’ll hear more about Forky but Keanu Reeves, Keagan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are the real heroes here, breathing fresh life into a 24-year-old tale. Plus Toy Story 4 is a film everyone can see, despite those surprisingly scary scenes. Read my original review here and keep checking the Free Movie Passes page to see what I’m giving away next! Some great films are on the horizon, including The Lion King and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and I just might get you in for free!
